HUNDREDS OF TONS OF EXPORT COFFEE UP IN NAD STORAGE FACILITIES

Banda Aceh, Oct 24 (ANTARA) - Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD)'s exporters are in a confusion since almost hundreds of tons of coffee are piling up in storage due to decreasing sales in the wake of the global financial crisis.

"I think all Acehnese coffee exporters had become frantic about the hundreds of tons of the supply that would be deteriorating," Rizwan Husin, head of Baitul Qirad Baburrayyan cooperation (KBQ) in Takengon, Central Aceh, said Friday.

KBQ Baburrayyan was one of the 12 companies which have been exporting Arabica coffee coming from Central Aceh and Bener Meriah regencies to the US and Europe.

"The financial crisis have reduced the number of coffee buyers to 50%. That is why the exporters are worried about the excessive supplies in their storage facilities," he said.

Meanwhile the price of export quality coffee had dropped from Rp 30,000 to Rp 15,000-Rp20,000 per kilogram.

"The problem now is that in this condition, the purchasing power of the people had declined," he said.

The largest market of Aceh's Arabica coffee is the US. Based on data of NAD, exports up to September 2008 reached 4.129 thousands tons worth of US$14.946 million , or 70.3 percent of the total commodity value.

Other importing countries are Canada with US$1.742 million (434.7 tons), Mexico US$1.164 million (288 tons), Australia US$130.8 thousands (37.2 tons,) and New Zealand US$126,171 thousands(36 tons).

Aceh's coffee is also exported to European countries such as the UK, Belgium, Germany, Norway, Sweden and New Zealand. Germany imported the largest volume of 291.96 tons worth US$ 694,449. Other countries' imports are less than US$ 300 thousand worth.
