KALLA: GOLKAR NUMBER ONE BECAUSE PDIP VOTES DOWN

Sukoharjo, C Java, Oct 25 (ANTARA) - Golkar Party Chairman Jusuf Kalla told party cadres here on Saturday that since 1999 votes for Golkar had never been above 22 percent and had even dropped in the 2004 general elections to 21 percent.
"Indeed we are number one then but that is because the votes for PDIP were down from 35 percent to only 16 percent," he said.
In view of the drop, he said he believed something had been wrong. "It had happened possibly because Golkar cadres would only work when there were events like a leadership meeting or a regional meeting and they were quiet afterwards and would again active ahead of the general elections."
Kalla said the militancy of Golkar cadres was low while they had also been less active in social service activities.
"The PKS have the two qualities. However what should they do when they could only garner 15 percent of the votes. Meanwhile by doing nothing Golkar would get 20 percent of the votes from its traditional supporters," he said.
That is why by working a bit harder Golkar will be able to grab five percent more votes, he said.
Kalla on the occasion meanwhile called on the party cadres not to talk about presidential candidacy before the legislative elections were finished.
"If we are just selling motorcycles through an exhibition we must not at the same time sell cars because it will not focus," he said.
He said as no party would be able to collect more than 50 percent of the votes, coalition would be a must. He said however that coalition negotiations should also be held only after the legislative elections.
"If we have started talking about presidential candidacy now we will then not concetrate on the party and as a result of the party's votes will be down," he said.
