Myanmar's MPs Interested In RI's Security Sector Reforms

Semarang, C Java, Dec 13 (ANTARA) - Several members of the Burmese parliament have expressed their interest in security sector reform efforts in Indonesia, according to Eva Kusuma Sundari, president of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Myanmar Caucus (AIPMC). "The members of parliament (MPs) are keen to understand how Indonesia will end the Indonesian Armed Forces` dual role (in enhancing the security of the country and taking part in the political and business arenas), and implement security sector reforms in the country," said Sundari on Thursday. According to her, the MPs are interested in Indonesia`s strategies because Myanmar and Indonesia are in the same boat. In Myanmar, 25 percent of the MPs are from the armed forces. Sundari said the AIPMC, which was held on Tuesday, was attended by 23 MPs from Myanmar. These MPs belonged to a number of political parties in Myanmar. They visited Indonesia to study its process of democracy, including efforts to eradicate corruption and to deepen its economic reforms.
