UN General Assembly adopts resolution on cooperation with GUAM

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 18 / Trend / The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution on cooperation with GUAM. The draft resolution on behalf of GUAM member-states namely Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova was delivered to the General Assembly by Azerbaijani Permanent Representative to the UN Agshin Mehdiyev. Ambassador Mehdiyev noted that the organisation has gained a regional status over the past 15 years exerting efforts to promote democracy and economic development. After gaining an observer status at the United Nations in 2004, cooperation with the organisation began. Adopting the resolution will further enhance this cooperation, contribute to peace, stability and development in the region, Mehdiyev said. The resolution reaffirms the organisation's encouragement to cooperate with the UN in such areas as trade, energy, economic development, science, education, combating terrorism, illegal migration and human trafficking. The Organisation for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM is a regional organisation established in 1997 by Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova (Uzbekistan was a member of the organisation from 1999 to 2005).
