Georgian President surprised by Armenian Diocese’s reaction regarding release of Russian agents from prison

Georgia, Tbilisi, Jan 28 /Trend, N. Kirskhalia/ President Mikheil Saakashvili is surprised by the reaction of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia regarding the release of Russian agents from prison and the fact that this was used as an opportunity to create politicized statements. This was said in a statement released by the presidential administration on Monday. "A recent statement of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia regarding the release of Georgian citizen Vaagn Chakhalyan from prison is surprising. In his statement, the President said that Chakhalyan's ethnic origin does not make any difference. The matter rests in criminal acts carried out by a Georgian citizen. The Georgian President did not express a strong negative attitude towards the amnesty, especially regarding the release of associated Russian agents who are mostly ethnic Georgians, "the statement said. The reaction expressed by the Armenian Diocese in Georgia on this political position is nonsensical, the statement said. It is unclear why the release of criminals, Russian agents and valid criticism of the new government of Georgia inspired politicized statements from Armenian diocese leaders, the statement said. "We hope that this misunderstanding was caused by a lack of information," the statement said. The Armenian Diocese issued a statement in which it called on the President and his party to refrain from "provocative statements" in connection with the Armenian activist Vahagn Chakhalyan, who was recently released by an amnesty law passed by Georgian Parliament. Earlier, President Mikheil Saakashvili said that Chakhalyan is an agent of Russian secret services attempting to tear the Armenian populated Samtskhe-Javakheti region away from Georgia.
