HOUSE PASSES PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION BILL INTO LAW
Jakarta, Oct 26 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) passed the Bill on Presidential and Vice Presidential Elections into law in a plenary meeting here on Wednesday afternoon.
House Speaker Agung Laksono knocked the gavel on the top of his desk to mark bill's passage into law after all of the House's 10 factions had expressed their acceptance of the draft during the plenary.
Even though expressing acceptance of the bill to be passed into law, three factions in the House submitted their notes of objection in their final views on the content of two articles which stipulated the conditions for the nomination of presidential and vice presidential candidates as well as on the concurrent posts for them.
"The objections of the three factions have been taken note of and will become part of the minutes of this decision," Agung Laksono said.
The National Awakening Party (PKB) faction and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) faction submitted a note of objection on the exclusion from the law of a ban for the president- and vice president-elect to concurrently serve as chairman of a political party.
The National Mandate Party (PAN) faction meanwhile objected to the requirement for a political party or a coalition of political parties to win at least 20 percent parliamentary seats or 25 percent valid votes in the legislative elections before they could nominate a president or vice president candidates.
In the meantime, Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto who represented the government said he hailed the endorsement of the presidential election law.
With the enactment of the bill on presidential and vice presidential election into law, the government hoped that the 2009 presidential and vice presidential elections would be held democratically.
He also expected that the General Elections Commission (KPU) would be able to organize the elections well, even though it was now still busy preparing the elections stages.
