Issue of Georgian-Russian border monitoring discussed with Swiss ambassador in Georgian parliament

Georgia, Tbilisi, Feb.20 / Trend, N. Kirtskhalia / The issue of monitoring the Georgian-Russian border was discussed with Swiss Ambassador Guenther Baechler in the Georgian parliament. As the Georgian parliament told Trend, during the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee the sides discussed the role of the Swiss company SGS, which will engage in the monitoring of the Georgian-Russian border. The parties also discussed other issues related to Georgian-Russian relations. In particular, the question was about the Geneva consultations, meetings in separate format and negotiations between the Georgian Prime Minister's Special Representative in the settlement of relations with Russia Zurab Abashidze and Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Grigory Karasin. "Switzerland as a mediator in the relationship with Russia plays a very important role in resolving the thorny issues of the relationship," chairman of the Georgian Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee Tedo Japaridze said commenting on the meeting with the diplomat. According to his assessment, similar meetings with foreign diplomats enhance the role of Parliament in the foreign policy process. Monitoring of the Georgian-Russian border was one of the conditions under which Georgia agreed to Russia's accession to the WTO. During the negotiations, it was agreed that monitoring will be conducted by the Swiss side. Late last year, it was announced that the Swiss company SGS will deal with the border monitoring.
