PRESIDENT: GOOD PUBLIC SERVICES MAY BOOST ECONOMIC GROWTH

Jakarta, Oct 31 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has said good public services may boost the country's economic growth.

Speaking at a function marking the conferment of prime service awards at the State Palace here late Friday, President Yudhoyono said the economy would grow significantly if the bureaucracy was able to provide public services in a good and transparent way.

"The economy grew by around 6 percent in the past seven quarters. The economic growth can be boosted by good public services. If good bureaucracy has been formed, I believe the economic growth will increase further," he said.

Therefore, he called on all sides to take part in creating good public services.

"In addition, good public services will also help common people get access to cheap, good and transparent services," he said.

The head of state further asked state apparatuses to make self improvements and abandon the paradigm of being served.

"Stay away from the paradigm of being served. Instead, you must serve the public well," he said.

On the occasion, the president conferred prime service awards on representatives of 80 public service units.

The president also presented tokens of appreciation to 11 chiefs of government agencies for their services in taking the lead in innovating prime services.

Also present at the ceremony were State Minister for Administrative Reforms Taufiq Effendi, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie, Attorney General Hendarman Supandji, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa and Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi.
