UMMC ACQUIRES FIRST FULLY AUTOMATED LABORATORY SYSTEM

PETALING JAYA (Malaysia), Nov 1 (Bernama) -- The University Malaya Medical Centre(UMMC), has acquired a fully automated laboratory system for its Central Diagnostic Laboratory, from Primabumi Sdn Bhd under a five-year contract worth RM15 million (US$4.2million).

The laboratory system, known as the Siemens' StreamLAB Automation System
with Dimension Vista 1500, is the first of its kind in Asia. It is supplied by
Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics and Primabumi is the local agent.

UMMC director, Professor Dr Ikram Shah Ismail said the system, is expected
to be installed by the first quarter of next year.

"It is an innovative automation system that consolidates all tasks
to a single workstation while automating pre and post analytical functions," he
told reporters after signing an agreement with Primabumi and Siemens Malaysia
Sdn Bhd to install and commission the system.

Ikram Shah said the Dimension Vista 1500 is the industry's latest ultra
integrated analyser that utilises four advanced detection technologies to
efficiently perform a broad range of high-quality chemistry and immunochemistry
tests on a single analyser.

The UMMC chairman of the board of directors, Dr Rozaidah Talib said the
installation of the laboratory system would help the hospital improve the
efficiency of work flow, documentation and compliance with international
standards as well as customer satisfaction.

She added that the testing turn-around-time will be improved and
productivity in the laboratory can be maximised with the end result being
improved total patient care and services at the hospital.

"We expect to treat one million patients by the end of the year. This
includes both in-patient and out-patient cases," she highlighted.

Last year, UMMC treated 850,000 patients.

Rozaidah said the Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory of UMMC also serves the
University Malaya Specialist Centre and selected private laboratories in the
Klang Valley.
