RI-PNG AGREE TO SOLVE BORDER ISSUES PEACEFULLY
Port Moresby, Nov 6 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian and Papua New Guinean (PNG) governments have agreed to solve border issues between the two countries peacefully.
The agreement was made by Indonesian Home Affaris Minister Mardiyanto and his Papua New Guinean counterpart Job Pomat in their opening address at the 26th Joint Border Committee meeting here on Thursday.
"Indonesia and PNG need to step up their cooperation in an effort to solve various border issues between the two countries," Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto said.
He said the two countries should also manage the border area well to strengthen their bilateral relations and to improve the welfare of the people at the border area.
The Indonesian home affairs minister expressed hope that several border issues between the two countries at Wara Smol and Marantikin, and environmental issue could be solved well as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, PNG Home Affairs Minister Job Pomat said all differences between the two countries would not hamper the solution of the border problems.
Pomat said he was preparing various related facilities to solve the problems.
"Infrastructure facility at Wutung, as well as a road linking Vanimo in PNG and Jayapura in Indonesia are almost ready," he said, adding that for Wara Smol issue, the PNG government has completed "term of reference."
Meanwhile, Director General for Legal and International Agreement of the Foreign Ministry Edi Pratomo said some of the agenda to be discussed at the meeting were the opening of cross border post in Skow-Wutung area, repatriation process of around 708 Indonesian nationals from at least 10 areas in PNG, and the establishment of
of "joint services on education and health in Wara Smol and Marantikin.
On the sidelines of the 26th Joint Border Committee meeting, RI Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto was scheduled to meet with PNG Prime Minister Michael Somare and Foreign Minister Sir Rabbie Namaliu later in the day.
