RI ENERGY MINISTER HAILS OBAMA'S VICTORY
Jakarta, Nov 6 (ANTARA) - Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro has welcomed Senator Barack Obama's landslide victory in the United States presidential election.
"I welcome Obama's victory in the presidential race in the United States, and I hope, during his presidency, Indonesia and the US can have more intensive energy dialogs," Yusgiantoro said after opening the 4th National Conference of the Renewable Energy Society of Indonesia (METI) here on Thursday.
The minister said Indonesia-US relations in the energy field had existed for a long time, dating back even to pre-independence days, and US involvement in the energy field in Indonesia began with the entry Chevron into Sumatra island about 80 years ago.
Cooperation with Chevron was then followed by other companies after independence. To date Chevron is the biggest oil producing company in Indonesia.
Besides producing oil and gas, Chevron through its subsidiaries was also producing geothermal energy in Indonesia.
PT Freeport McMorant and PT Newmont represented the United States in Indonesia. The two companies produce gold and copper in Indonesia.
Therefore, the energy minister expressed hope that the energy dialog between Indonesia and the UN during Obama's government would be more intensive.
Meanwhile, Obama in his victory speech in Washington on Tuesday said that change has come to America.
"It's been a long time coming. But tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America," he said in front of a crowd of 65,000 people.
