RI MEDIA TALK ABOUT PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFULS

Jakarta, Nov 6 (ANTARA) - Indonesian mass media representatives here Thursday gave their opinions on the criteria the country's next president should meet on the occasion of the launching of a website of the Indonesian Journalist Association (PWI) at a function organized by ANTARA News Agency.
At the function with Andy F Noya from private TV station Metro TV as moderator, the mass media representatives suggested different criteria for the presidential candidates who will compete in the 2004 presidential election.
Among the media representatives was Rosiana Silalahi, chief editor of private television station SCTV, who said that the next Indonesian president should have a strong personality and leadership capabilities besides being able to take decisions in any situation and condition.
"A president must not be too smart but he or she must be able to choose the right persons to be his or her assistants (ministers)," Rosiana said, adding that a president as a leader should defend or protect his or her subordinates when they meet trouble in implementing government policies.
She also hoped as a national leader the next president should uphold cultural values like speaking always in the national language, Bahasa Indonesia. "I am annoyed by leaders who frequently use English terms (during their conversations or speeches) to show that they are smart," she said.
The SCTV editor in chief thus called on Indonesian leaders to hold their conversations or speeches in the national language and uphold the country's cultural diversity as a national asset.
In the meantime, Jakarta Post chief editor Endi Bayuni underlined the importance of the process of selecting presidential candidates through tests, examinations, track records and assessing his or her psychological conditions (temperament).
Kristanto of Sinar Harapan daily meanwhile said he hoped there would be a president with a concept on maritime development as Indonesia is an archipelagic country which is surrounded by water.
"Thus, the next president should have a vision on maritime development and make approaches that are different from those in the past as he or she must pay more attention to people living near water," he said.
Likewise, the next president must also have real knowledge about national problems and not only pretend to have such knowledge , he said, adding that the next president should be brave in facing foreign pressures that harm the national interest. "We are frequently dictated by foreigners and this must be ended," he said.
Among the other mass media chiefs attending the session were Syaiful Hadi of ANTARA News Agency , Taufik Miharja of Kompas daily, Ichwanul K of Republika daily, Arief Suditomo of private television station RCTI, Uni Lubis of private TV station ANTV and Rei Wijaya of private TV station TPI.
During the function which was also attended by PWI (Indonesian Journalist Association) chairman Margiono, the PWI launched its website -- www.pwi.or.id -- to show that the association is a window of information on the Indonesian press.
Also on hand at the function were representatives of a number of political parties, including the Golkar Party, the Democrat Party and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) all of whom promoted their respective presidential candidates for the 2009 presidential election.
