TAIWANESE VOLUNTEERS GIVE FREE MEDICAL SERVICES IN ACEH

Banda Aceh, Indonesia, Nov 10 (ANTARA) - Dozens of health volunteers from Taiwan gave free medical services to people in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar district as a follow up to Taiwan's humanitarian assistance for victims of the December 26, 2004 devastating tsunami in Nanggroe Aceh Salam (NAD) province, their spokesman said.

"The free medical services were a follow-up to our humanitarian assistance program for the Aceh people in the aftermath of the tsunami," said Li Tu, chairman of the Taiwanese health volunteers delegation, here on Monday.

He said the Taiwanese humanitarian mission in Aceh was organized by the country's Dhoima Drum Mountain Foundation in cooperation with Kasih Sayang Abadi foundation, the Indonesia Naturopathy Association, and the Teungku Cik Kuta Karang foundation in Aceh Besar district.
"We also give free medical services to people in disaster areas in Nias in North Sumatra and Yogyakarta. We are also part of the Taiwan Search and Rescue (SAR) team. Besides the free medical services, we have also cooperated in the school reconstruction process and the construction of orphanages in Aceh Besar," Li Tu said.
Meanwhile, Teungku Cik Kuta Karang foundation chairman Azhar Idris said around 500 people in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar district were given free medical treatment by the Taiwanese volunteers from Saturday to Sunday.
"We are grateful to the Taiwanese health volunteers who have helped lighten the burden of people, especially economically-weak people in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar," Azhar Idris said.
Chairman of the Medan-based Kasih Sayang Abadi foundation, Kasim, said the Taiwanese health volunteers were assisted by a medical team from Medan.
"The free medical services were given by the Taiwanese health volunteers on the occasion of the 42nd National Health Day (HKN) commemoration in an effort to introduce the local people to Chinese traditional medicine," Kasim said, adding that the traditional medicine had been made without chemical substances.
Asked about the possibility of cooperation between Cik Kuta Karang foundation and Kasih Sayang Abadi foundation to train Aceh Besar youths in health care skills, Kasim said it was wide open.
