PRESIDENT HOLDS TELECONFERENCE WITH ACEH, W SUMATRA GOVERNORS

Banda Aceh, Nov 11 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono held a video conference with the governors of West Sumatra and Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) on Tuesday to discuss the use of sophisticated technology to warn people of imminent natural disasters.
On the occasion, President Yudhoyono said sophisticated technology with a costly system to warn people against an imminent disaster would be useless if they lacked awareness to respond to the warnings.
"There is no point in installing sophisticated technology with a costly system to warn people against imminent disaster, if the people have no awareness to respond to the warning," the president said.
The head of state held the teleconference in conjunction with the launching of an Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS) in Jakarta on Tuesday.
In the teleconference, President Yudhoyono called on every province in Indonesia to remain ready and vigilant to face tsunami disasters which might happen any time.
After the devastating tsunami on December 26, 2004 which claimed hundreds of thousands of lives in Aceh, six tsunami early warning systems had been installed in several provinces, including Padang in West Sumatra and Bali which were also prone to tsunami.
Therefore President Yudhoyono reminded the people in the areas where the tsunami early warning system had been installed to keep it and to remain alert and take safety measures when there was a warning.
According to the president, the tsunami early warning system was only an instrument that could remind the people of an imminent tsunami but safety measures were entirely in the hands of the people under threat.
"I am sure our brothers and sisters in Aceh who have had terrible experience with tsunami will be more ready to anticipate it," Yudhoyono said.
In response to Ageh Governor Irwandi Yusuf's request that the tsunami early waning system would also be installed in other districts in the province, President Yudhoyono said the related ministers and local administrations should plan it together.
"Of course, we will install it in accordance with our ability to do so," Yudhoyono said.
