TWELVE COUNTRIES PARTICIPATING IN TSUNAMI CONFERENCE IN BALI

Jakarta, Nov 12 (ANTARA) - As many as 100 delgates from 12 countries are taking part in an International Conference on Tsunami Warning (ICTW) in Nusa Dua, Bali, which opened on November 11 and is to run until November 14, 2008.

Themed "Towards Safer Coastal Communities", the event was opened by Indonesia's Research and Technology Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman. The forum was expected to increase the world's understanding about Tsunami.
"We have to learn from past Tsunamis, especially about how to increase people's awareness when the disaster strikes," Kadiman said on his opening speech.
ICTW is a scientific forum for Tsunami experts around the world and intended to enable them to exchange information and research results on Tsunami disasters. The conference takes place in conjunction with the launching of Indonesia's Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS) on November 11, 2008.
The conference was scheduled to present speakers from several institutions such as Hiroo Kanamori from Caltech Pasadena, Eddie Bernard from the National Oceanic and Athmospheric Administration (NOAA), Kenji Satake from Tokyo University, Stefan Dech from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and Jan Sopaheluwakan from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI).
Also to be presented were 80 scientific papers from 12 participating countries. The presentations would be done in five sessions on specific topics, namely Sea-level Monitoring Database, Modelling and Simulation Information, Communication and Warning Dissemination, Crustal Deformation Monitoring, and Communnity Preparedness and Mitigation.
According to the chairman of the organizing committee, Prof. Dr. Ir. Andrianto Handojo, the 12 participating countries are Indonesia, Germany, the US, Japan, the Philiphines, Singapore, Malaysia, Srilanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Sweden.
In conjuncion with the ICTW, Indonesia was also hosting the Asian Conference on Disaster Reduction 2008 (ACDR). The conference brings togther representatives of 28 Asian countries to observe and evaluate the implementation of the Hyogo Framework of Action (HFA) in each country. The main theme of this event is "Partnership Between People and Private Sector in Decreasing the Risk of Natural Disasters."
