RI WINS INT'L MATH, PHYSICS OLYMPIAD 2008 CHAMPIONSHIP
Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, Nov 14 (ANTARA) - Indonesia emerged as the champion of the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad 2008 (IMSO) having won eight gold medals, 10 silvers and 14 bronzes at the event held here Nov 9-13.
The runner up was Taiwan which had collected three gold medals, followed by Singapore with two golds, Thailand and the Philippines with one gold each.
The event was participated in by 250 students from 12 countries, including Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Hongkong, the Philippines, Nigeria, China and Indonesia.
"To support the event, the Mataram city administration contributed Rp 250 million to the organizing committee and the West Nusatenggara governor Rp 50 million," Mataram Mayor H Moh Ruslan said here Friday.
The mayor said the city administration was pleased that students from Mataram in the event contributed one silver and three bronze medals to the Indonesian team's performance.
He said NTB Governor KH M Zainul Majdi would give bonuses to Mataram students who had won medals.
The bonuses, he said, had been promised by the governor when he opened the IMSO on November 9, 2008. Meanwhile, the Mataram mayor did not promise anything at the time.
"However, the Mataram city administration will give them some tokens of appreciation," he said.
The Mataram students who had won medals in IMSO would also be paraded through the city streets to introduce them to the local community, the mayor said.
