Moeldoko Endorses Sutarman As National Police Chief

Jakarta, Oct 17 (Antara) - Police Commissioner General Sutarman on Thursday received support from Defense Forces (TNI) Commander General Moeldoko for his candidacy as Indonesia`s next national police chief. "He fits," said General Moeldoko pithily when asked to comment on Comm. Gen. Sutarman. Moedoko hailed the performance of the current chief in the area of crime investigation, and admitted that he had already known Sutarman since his days as a cadet. "He is my friend whom I have known since he was a cadet. I know him and his performance is good," he said. Rejecting claims that the relationship between the TNI and the police had been less than harmonious, Moeldoko hoped that the synergy between the two institutions would be even stronger and better with Sutarman`s possible promotion as the national police chief. "So far, it (the relationship) is good. In the future, it must be stronger and better," he said. The House of Representatives` Commission III held a test for determining fitness and suitability of Sutarman, who is the sole candidate for the top police post. It was in continuation of similar tests being carried out since last week. On Wednesday, the Commission invited the National Police and Commission and the financial transactions analysis and reporting center (PPATK) to hear their recommendations with regard to Sutarman`s candidacy. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has nominated Sutarman as the sole candidate to replace current national police chief General Timur Pradopo who would retire in January 2014.
