TWENTY-TWO DIED OF HIV/AIDS IN MATARAM SINCE 2001
Mataram, Indonesia, Nov 18 (ANTARA) - A total of 22 HIV/AIDS sufferers have died since 2001 in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), a health official said.
Head of Mataram Health Service Ketut Lania said here on Tuesday the number of people dying of HIV/AIDS over the past eight years had continued to increase.
"The number of people who died of the disease was the highest this year," Lania said after attending a meeting held to prepare the commemoration of World AIDS Day.
He said nine AIDS sufferers died in NTB in 2008 and eight in 2007 while in 2001 there was only one sufferer who died of the disease.
Lania said NTB province had recorded 64 HIV and 42 AIDS cases. Most of the victims were in their productive age. They were infected with the virus through intravenous drug injections and sex with different partners.
The NTB health office is intensively providing information to the public on the disease and on how to improve the quality of the local people's health.
In the meantime, NTB's Regional Legislative Assembly (DPRD) is discussing a regulation on the prevention and handling of HIV/AIDS in an effort to overcome the increasing HIV/AIDS cases in the province.
