RI PAINTER EXHIBITS WORKS AT UN GENEVA HEADQUARTERS
Jakarta, Nov 21 (ANTARA) - Indonesian painter Herry Dim held an exhibition of his works at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 18 to 20, 2008, according to a report from the Swiss capital.
Under the title "A Child's World of Hope and Peace", Herry Dim's exhibition of 20 paintings was held in the main gallery of the UN headquarters, the Salle de Pas Perdus, Palais des Nations, the Office of Indonesia's Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, said in a press release on Friday.
"I realize that I might not be the best painter in Indonesia, but I am very proud that the works of an Indonesian artist can be shown to the international world," Herry said.
The prestigious moment was historical to the artistic painting community in Indonesia since it was the first time for Indonesian works of art to be shown to the international community in Geneva.
In fact, one of Herry's paintings titled "My White Flag in the Blue" was chosen by the chairman of the Cultural Activities Committee of the UN office in Geneva (UNOG), Pierre Le Loarer, to adorn one of the halls of the UN office.
The painting which showed plain faces of Indonesian children standing next to a white flag against a background in predominantly blue colors was considered a reflection of the UN's main mission as an organization fighting for peace and humanity.
An artist from Bandung, West Java, Herry Dim got the chance to exhibit in Geneva while he was a volunteer in the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) in taking care of children of earthquake victims in Yogyakarta province in May 2006.
After the earthquake, Herry Dim decided to paint the happy, instead of the sad, faces of those children.
"Children , in any condition, are always happy and full of hope for the future," he said.
The exhibition in Geneva was part of activities in commemorating the United Nations Children's Day on November 20, 2008, in conjunction with an Indonesian cultural show, "Teater Tanah Air", which involved 13 talented Indonesian children, and was held on November 19, 2008 at the same place.
