IPU Chief: No Military Solution To Syrian Crisis

Tehran, Feb 18, IRNA - President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Abdelwahad Radi said there is no military solution to the big calamity in Syria and urged all to work out a political solution to the crisis. He made the remarks while addressing the opening ceremony of the 9th Session of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Member States (PUIC) here Tuesday morning. He stressed that since the ongoing crisis in Syria harms both government and the nation, all parties have to try to find a political solution to the crisis. He said it is unacceptable to the contemporary world witness a country like Syria with great history, civilization and culture as a demolished state. He said the Syrian nation is undergoing different plights but it should be noted that the crisis has no military solution. Elsewhere in his remarks, he welcomed the nuclear talks between Iran and the 5+1 and asked both sides to make permanent the agreements already reached so that they could serve as a basis for fresh international relations. Noting that the new era is witnessing more rising of civilian voices, he said now women and young people have the feeling that they are not adequately represented in the parliaments. The former speaker of the Morocco parliament further pointed to the great developments in the parliaments of certain Arab countries like Algeria, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Tunisia in this connection. He said that the OIC Parliamentary Union should adhere to its founding statement which promoted peace, human rights, freedom of expression and thought and urged the body to help consolidate democracy and stability in the Muslim World./end
