RI STUDYING POTATO INNOVATION TECHNOLOGY
Lima, Nov 24 (ANTARA) - Indonesia as a biggest potato producer in South East Asia continues to develop its potato production by studying potato innovation technology from Peru, the world biggest potato producer country, Indonesian Minister of Agriculture Anton Apriyantono said.
"Lima has the world biggest potato research center 'Centro Internasionale Papa (CIP) under the United Nation and funded by many countries, including Indonesia," Apriyantono said here on Sunday.
The CIP has the task to collect and preserve the genetic resources of potatoes throughout the world.
He said that the potato development center was very useful for the development of Indonesia's potato production, because of the 15 potato varieties in Indonesia, 10 came from the center.
With the CIP branch in Lembang, West Java, Indonesia is able to develop a local variety named 'Margahayu.'
"It tastes more delicious than that of chip potato," the minister said.
With the new variety, the minister expressed hope that Indonesia would be able to increase its production where at present it was recorded at one million tons annually with a plantation acreage of 60,000 hectares.
"The challenges we are facing in the current efforts to carry out research is to develop potato which is able to grow on a low-lying plain, 500-600 meters above the sea level," the minister said.
The second challenge, according to the minister, is that how to find a variety which is more immune to diseases such as French fries potato.
Indonesia is also now exporting its potato production to a number of states such as Singapore an Malaysia.
Previously in Brazil, the minister also said that Indonesia needed to learn more about agricultural development and research from Brazil.
"We need to learn many things from Brazil," said Apriyantono who is one of several cabinet members accompanying President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on a tour of four American countries, including Brazil.
Here in Peru, the minister accompanied the President in attending the 16th APEC economic leaders meeting held on November 22 - 23, 2008.
