IPOC 2008 TO BE HELD IN BALI

Jakarta, Nov 24 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Oil Palm Producers Association (Gapki) is to hold an Indonesian Palm Oil Conference (IPOC) on December 3 and 4, 2008 in Nusa Dua, Bali, with 500 participants from 20 countries.

"IPOC is our regular annual year-end agenda. We will try to solve the problems facing our CPO industry," Akmaluddin Hasibuan, Gapki chairman said here Monday.

The CPO industry in Indonesia was promising yet full of challenges in the future, he said, adding the market share of Indonesia's CPO exports has been increasing as the commodity is also used to produce renewable energy especially under the Kyoto Protocol.

Indonesia contributed 25 percent of the CPO produced into world vegetable oil, and the market share accounted for 50 percent of the world's, he said.

"The industry is promising. However the most current serious challenge is to manage this industry constantly to fulfill three Ps. namely the planet, people and profit," he said.

He also said that that another challenge is to create an industry strong enough to survive in changing global economic situations.

Meanwhile, vice chairman of the IPOC 2008 organizing committee, Suryanto, said there would also be a Price Outlook 2009 on the prospects of the oil palm industry and future CPO prices.

The international conference which will be opened by Agriculture Minister Anton Apriantono, will feature Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu who will deliver a keynote address on Sustainable Palm Oil Development.

Gapki also featured other speakers from international NGOs such as Arif Wicaksono of Greenpeace Southeast Asia and Rudy Lumuru from Sawit Watch, Ps, he said.
