BANKS TO FOCUS ON SMALL BUSINESSES IN 2009

Jakarta, Nov 26 (ANTARA) - Banks at home are expected to focus their credit provision in 2009 on small and medium scale enterprises (SME) which have proved their ability to survive in the 1997 economic crisis, a banker said.

"SMEs in 2009 is a sector most favored by banks to channel their credits because this sector constitutes the economic bumper which has the ability to survive for the development of the national economy," Vice President of PT Panin Bank Roosniati Salihin said here on Tuesday.
She said that banks at home would focus on SMEs because this sector still had the potentials to be exploited further. After all, the impact of the global financial crisis would be increasingly felt next year.
It is therefore predicted that credit provision will be declining in 2009 because the channeling of credit to other sectors such as housing and vehicles will be carried out selectively.
"It is expected that banks will be cautious in providing credits for the consumptive sectors for fear of bad credits later on," she said.
Roosniati said that Panin Bank would provide 15 to 20 percent credits, a steep decline compared with that in 2007 when it channeled 35 percent credits.
Therefore, the bank will focus on SMEs and trade sectors in providing its credits because both sectors still have a good market, she said.
