HOUSE SPEAKER : ASIAN COUNTRIES CAN HELP REVIVE WORLD ECONOMY
Jakarta, Nov 27 (ANTARA) - Asian countries can play a role in reviving the world economy by overcoming the impact of the global financial crisis on trade and production in a number of countries, House of Representatives (DPR) Agung Laksono said here on Thursday.
Speaking at the opening of the third Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) meeting at the legislative building, Laksono said the global economic crisis, triggered by a banking and financial meltdown, should be overcome immediately.
Otherwise it would create a massive economic tsunami in all other sectors of life in many more countries around the world.
Laksono said the solution to the crisis should be done by all countries, especially the developed countries.
He said the recent G-20 meeting in Washington DC should be welcomed as an important forum to promote dialog between advanced and emerging countries on key issues around economic growth and stability of the financial system.
According to him, the forum had produced a number of commitments to overcoming the financial crisis by among other things supporting developing countries with funding through stimuli such as liquidity support facilities and programs.
However, Laksono added, the results of the G-20 forum were still in the form of agreements which should be followed up at the next meetings to make more concrete implementation programs.
"The world community continues to wait and monitor sustainable economic development, especially the crisis-hit developing countries," Laksono said.
"We do not want poverty to flourish as a result of the global financial crisis, and we also do not want economic depression such as happened in 1930 and the monetary crisis in 1997/1998 to happen again," Laksono said.
He added that following the global crisis, millions of new poor people had emerged around the world and millions of workers were facing the threat of unemployment.
Laksono said the poverty which had hit almost all developing countries was at least triggered by the instability of the international trade and financial systems.
