VP: ARREST THOSE RESPONSIBLE IN BANK CENTURY CASE
Jakarta, Oct. 28 (ANTARA) - Vice President M Jusuf Kalla has ordered the police to immediately arrest whoever was responsible in Bank Century case as a lesson to others.
"We have to be firm with those guilty. Arrest them (those responsible in the Bank Century case) so others will do their jobs responsibly," Kalla said here on Friday in response to the press questions.
The government is at present strict, he said. Whoever is guilty has to face legal sanctions, he said.
He said the current administration would not be like that in 1998 when the government bailed out banks that were no longer able to honor their obligations during the monetary crisis.
"The government cannot be expected to bear all the burdens. There should be a sharing of responsibilities. Bank Indonesia (BI) should be responsible. The (Cenutury Bank's) owner must also be responsible," Kalla said.
Strict action was needed so that others could learn about responsibility sharing, he said. By doing so, banks will really adopt the principle of prudence, he stated.
PT Bank Century Tbk recently failed to make interbank payments due to technical problems. Rumors around the glitch prompted Bank Century clients to withdraw their money from the bank while trading in the bank's shares at the Jakarta bourse was suspended recently.
