POLICE DETAIN PRESIDENT DIRECTOR OF BANK CENTURY
Jakarta, Nov. 28 (ANTARA) - The Police's Criminal Investigation Unit arrested Bank Century President Director Hermanus Hasan Muslim as a suspect in the bank's interbank payment failure case.
As the bank's president director, Hermanus Muslim had a say in running the bank, Head of the Police's Criminal Investigation Unit Commissioner General Susno Duadji said here on Friday.
"He the one who decided whether the bank would turn right or left," Duadji said.
He would be imposed with sanction in line with the law no. 10/1998, article 49 on banking.
Hermanus Muslim has been detained since November 27 on Thursday after being grilled by the police investigators, he said.
Previously, the police arrested Robert Tantular (46), one of Bank Century's share holders.
Robert Tantular, as a share holder, was suspected of having influenced the bank's directors to commit an action against the banking law, he said.
He might be sentenced to between three years and eight years in prison and imposed with a fine amounting between Rp5 billion and Rp100 billion for violating the Law No. 10/1998, article 50 on banking.
Besides, he was also suspected of violating the same law's article 50A, and could be jailed for seven years or up to 15 years, and imposed with a fine amounting between Rp10 billion and Rp200 billion.
PT Bank Century Tbk on November 13, 2008, failed to make interbank payments due to technical problems. Rumors around the glitch prompted Bank Century clients to withdraw their money from the bank while trading in the bank's shares at the Jakarta bourse was suspended recently.
The government, through the deposit guarantor body (LPS) took over the bank on November 21, 2008.
The legal affairs ministry has banned some directors, commissioners and a share holder of Bank Century from going out of the country, for their alleged involvement in the case.
