UNICEF COMPLETES CONSTRUCTION OF 148 SCHOOLS IN ACEH
Banda Aceh, Nov 29 (ANTARA) - The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) has completed the construction of 148 elementary school buildings at 11 districts and municipalities in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province.
"The Unicef has a commitment to construct a total of 346 school buildings -- 226 in Aceh province and 120 in Nias and South Nias districts in North Sumatra," Unicef spokesperson Ivy Susanti said here on Saturday.
She said the Unicef office in Banda Aceh had handed nine schools with their facilities to Aceh Besar district administration.
"The schools were handed by the chief of Unicef's education section in Banda Aceh, Hoang van Sit, to Aceh Besar district head Bukhari Daud last Thursday," Ivy Susanti said.
Unicef also built 43 schools at several subdistricts in Aceh Besar, which bore the brunt of devastating tsunami on December 26, 2004.
Meanwhile, Hoang van Sit said Unicef would continue to build elementary school building in Aceh, although it faced many problems such as illegal levy, difficult access to the location, and the impact of global financial crisis on construction materials and service.
"We will continue with the construction of schools in Aceh in accordance with our commitment to the provincial administration," van Sit said.
Unicef was created by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 1946 to provide emergency food and health-care to children in countries that had been devastated by World War II.
In 1953, UNICEF became a permanent part of the United Nations System and its name was shortened from the original United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund but it has continued to be known by the popular acronym based on this old name.
Headquartered in New York City, UNICEF provides long-term humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries.
