TWO PAPUAN ASYLUM SEEKERS IN AUSTRALIA BACK IN JAKARTA
Tangerang, Dec 29 (ANTARA) - Two of over 40 Papuans who were granted temporary protection visas after landing on Cape York in Northern Australia in 2006 arrived at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 4:15 on Saturday afternoon.
Yunus Wanggai and his seven-year old daughter Anike Wanggai returned to Indonesia after having negotiated their repatriation with the Indonesian embassy in Canberra.
In January 2006, 43 Papuans, including Yunus Wanggai and his daughter, spent five days at sea in a traditional outrigger boat before finally arriving in Queensland's Cape York where they promptly asked for asylum.
All were eventually granted temporary protection visas by the Australian Immigration office.
But in late September this year, two of the asylum seekers, namely Hana Gobay and Yubel Kareni returned to Papua, and now Yunus Wanggai and his daughter followed their steps to return to Indonesia.
Wanggai and his daughter arrived in Jakarta by Garuda Indonesia GA-409 from Denpasar, Bali, on Saturday.
Wanggai was in light blue jeans and gray jacked with a red cap on his head, while his daughter was in a pink blouse and holding a koala on her arm when they stepped out of the Garuda plane at Soekarno-Hatta airport.
