APA TO STUDY MODELS FOR GLOBAL FINANCIAL SYSTEM REFORM
Jakarta, Dec 29 (ANTARA) - The Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA)'s commission on economy and sustainable development has decided to form a working group to study models for a new global financial system, the assembly's leader said.
Speaking to the press after closing the third APA meeting here on Saturday, APA president who is concurrently Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono said APA had formed a working group (Pokja) to study models for reforms of the international financial and monetary system.
"The group will start to work and report the result to the next APA meeting," Laksono said, adding that in its third meeting APA had agreed to create a new global financial management system.
In APA's view, the present global financial system was in reality very brittle and no longer an effective means to answer various international problems.
Therefore, Laksono said, Asian countries had to muster their internal strengths to participate in the management of international monetary system.
Meanwhile, Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Board (BKSAP) chairman Abdillah Toha said most of the world's foreign exchange reserves was now in the hands of Asian countries.
He said there was US$3 trillion in Asia and it could be used as optimally as possible for the welfare of the people in Asian countries.
"APA should mobilize the strength of Asian countries and take part in the regulation of the world financial system, and Indonesia will take the initiative to build up Asian economic power," Toha said.
He said Asian countries had the capability to play an important role in the international world at present and in the future.
In its resolution, APA asked its members and governments to join hands in overcoming the negative consequences of the global financial crisis and to discuss it in regional and international forum.
