OIC to set up Human Rights Council for Muslim Countries
Cairo, December 08, SPA -- Secretary General of the Organization of
Islamic Conference (OIC) Dr Ekmel-Eddin Ihsanoglu said the OIC will
soon start establishing a Human Rights Council for Muslim Countries.
"The OIC is planning to formulate a program for containing the
phenomenon of poverty in the Muslim world, and it will call for
convening a conference to review the situation of the Muslim refugees
in the world, " he said.
He also noted that the OIC's General Secretariat has set up an
observatory for observing the phenomenon of Islam-phobia.
The first report in this respect was issued in March 2008 and the
report was distributed to the OIC's member states at Dakar Islamic
summit, he said.
Dr. Ihsanoglu shed light on the role of the OIC in the Muslim world
and in the international policy in addition to its role in tackling
the problems facing the Muslim world.
"We are in an era when slur campaigns are launched against Islam by
certain quarters which target the tolerant Islamic teachings so as to
create a state of hatred towards Islam and Muslims, " he noted
underlining the importance of confronting these attacks in a wise
manner through projecting the reality of Islam.
He said the issues of human rights and the status of women are
exploited by the enemies of Islam, so it is high time to present the
real stand of Islam towards the human rights and the women.
He also pointed out that there is a tangible progress as regards
improving the status of women in the Muslim countries.
On the Palestinian problem, he condemned the aggression being
carried out by the Israeli settlers against the Palestinian
civilians.
"What is taking place in the occupied territories and the siege
imposed on Gaza provide a clear evidence for Israel's disrespect to
the international law and to the agreements signed with the
Palestinian side, he noted.
Dr. Ihsanoglu said the OIC had contributed to entry of ten trucks
loaded with humanitarian assistance to Gaza, and the relief
assistance was distributed to the refugees through the UNRWA.
He urged the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary General to
work for ending Israel's continuous aggression and to take the
required measures for the protection of the Palestinian people.
"The current happenings in the Palestinian territories are a pity, "
he said.
Criticizing the existing disunity among the Palestinians, he said
this disunity will never serve the Palestinian cause.
On the Iraqi issue, he said the OIC has succeeded in convening the
first meeting between Sunnis and Shiites in Iraq.
He noted that several representatives of the OIC had visited Iraq
and participated in the conferences of dialogue there.
