FLASH FLOODS EXPAND IN ACEH SINGKIL DISTRICT

Banda Aceh, Aceh Province, Dec. 11 (ANTARA) - Flash floods that have been hitting Aceh Singkil District since last week (Dec. 5), have expanded, forcing local residents to flee to safer places.

The floods affected resettlement areas in Singkil and Simpang sub districts, Bukhari of the Aceh provincial social affairs service, said here on Thursday.

Some 3,532 houses were inundated by the floods which had been triggered by incessant downpours. The Lae Soraya and Lae Cenandang rivers had also overflowed.

"Singkil has been affected the worst by the flooding," Bukhari said, quoting information from Aceh Singkil District Head Khazali.

Around 16,000 people were forced to evacuate to higher ground where they have been accommodated in emergency tents and relatives' houses.

Head of Singkil Subdistrict Kaharuddin reported that 14 villages in his subdistrict were flooded and more than 3,000 families had fled their homes to safer areas.

Among the affected-villages were Pulo Sarok, Pasar, Ujung, Kilangan, Teluk Ambon, Rantau Gedang, Teluk Pula, Talak Pasir, Selok Aceh, Suka Makmur, Ujung Bawang and Siti Ambia, he said.

Flood victims have received relief aid such as instant noddle, sugar, canned fish, cooking oil, rice and eggs.
