BADAWI : ALATAS DID MUCH TO STRENGTHEN RI-MALAYSIA RELATIONS

Jakarta, Dec. 11 (ANTARA) - Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Ali Alatas, former Indonesian foreign minister who died in Singapore on Thursday morning, was a statesman who had done much to strengthen Indonesia-Malaysia relations.

"I am really shocked when I heard the news about Mr. Ali Alatas' demise in Singapore. He was a statesman especially for Malaysia, because of his role in developing sound bilateral relations between Indonesia and Malaysia," Badawi said here on Thursday, prior to the opening of the 37th Session of General Border Committee of Malaysia-Indonesia (GBC Malindo).

Badawi expressed his condolences for Alatas and said that the former foreign affairs minister had even continued his services for better ties between the two neighboring countries even when he had been no longer a foreign minister.

The Malaysian prime minister said Alatas had continuously promoted ASEAN member countries' efforts, in particular Indonesian and Malaysian leaders, to strengthen brotherhood, friendship, and sound bilateral relations between the two countries, which helped develop ASEAN into a regional power.

Ali Alatas, whose last position was chairman of the Presidential Advisory Board, passed away at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore at 7:30 local time on Thursday morning. Alatas served as Foreign Affairs Minister of Indonesia from 1988 to 1999.
