KPA REJECTS ALLUSIONS TO "SEPARATIST" PARTIES IN ACEH
Banda Aceh, Dec 11 (ANTARA) - There are no political parties with a "separatist" ideology in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province, a spokesman of the Aceh Transitional Committee (KPA) said here Thursday.
"We need to make it clear that all political parties in Aceh were established in accordance with the Constitution and the ideology of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI), and thus there is no separatist party in Aceh any more," said Ibrahim bin Syamsuddin, the KPA's information officer.
He made the statement with reference to the appearance of late of banners in public places with texts suggesting the existence of "separatist" parties and "separatist" legislative candidates in the province.
"The presence of those banners is really disturbing and therefore we ask the police and government to immediately have them removed and to take action against the people behind them," Ibrahim said.
He said the allusion made in the banners to "separatist" parties was a form of intimidation and terror against the people of Aceh designed to make them dislike certain political parties in the runup to next year's general election.
The display of such banners could trigger conflict and disturb the process of fair and peaceful legislative elections in the province, he said.
Ibrahim said all people in Aceh should know that there were no more separatist parties or separatist movements in Aceh after the signing of the peace agreement between the government and the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) in Helsinki, Finland, on August 15, 2005.
"So, there are no more separatist parties or separatist legislative candidates in Aceh. Therefore, we hope no party will make dirty political maneuvers that could threaten the peace process in this province," Ibrahim said.
He also called on the Aceh people to remain on guard against what he described as "narrow-minded ultranationalist parties" which did not want peace to prevail in the province.
