AUSTRALIA-INDONESIA CONFERENCE TO BE HELD NEXT FEBRUARY
Jakarta, Dec 11 (ANTARA) - Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced on Wednesday that his country would host a major conference on the future of the Australia-Indonesia bilateral relationship in Sydney from Februrary 19-21, 2009, an embassy media release has said.
It said the conference would bring together up to 120 leading Indonesians and Australians from a diverse range of backgrounds, such as government, business, the media, universities, community organizations, faith groups and youth.
According to the embassy media release the important conference for the region's future would discuss challenges faced by both countries, including strengthening democratic institutions; maintaining economic growth; and protecting the environment.
It would give people from different backgrounds the opportunity to generate ideas about the Australia-Indonesia relationship, and to help shape its future.
Prime Minister Rudd and President Yudhoyono had previously discussed holding such a conference in earlier bilateral meetings.
Both leaders firmly believe this conference would assist both Indonesian and Australian people to better understand each others' perspectives and priorities which will, in turn, assist in strengthening the already excellent bilateral relationship between the two countries.
