PRESIDENT TO DEDICATE SOEDIRMAN MONUMENT
Solo, Central Java, Dec 11 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to dedicate a Grand Commander Sudirman Monument in Mawangan village, Pacitan district, East Java, on December 15, 2008, Brawijaya Militry Commander Maj Gen Suwarno said here on Thursday.
The Brawijaya Military commander made the remark on the sidelines of a rehearsal of a memorial event on Sudirman's days of struggle at the Sriwedari Sports Stadium.
The memorial event was of the Grand Commander's historical fragment which will be held during the president's visit is directed by Lt Col Inf Sadputro Adi Nugroho and will be supported by 1,773 military personnel.
Before the inauguration of the monument, a ceremony will be held to observe the Indonesian Army's anniversary.
Nawangan village during the war of independence was used as a base of struggle by Sudirman. "From this place, Grand Commander Sudirman ran his military command and issued orders to soldiers to recapture part of the motherland being occupied by colonizers," Suwarno said.
In memory of the Grand Commander's services, a Sudirman monument was built in the village.
