SINGAPOREAN TANKER RESCUES 14 SHIPWRECKED INDONESIAN SAILORS
Batam, Dec. 11 (ANTARA) - A Singaporean tanker, the Summer Spirit, on Wednesday afternoon rescued 14 crew members of an Indonesian vessel, the MV Mega Permai, which sank in Bintan waters, on Monday (Dec. 8).
The commander of the Indonesian Navy's Western Fleet's Martime Safety Task Force, Commodore Sugeng Darmawan, on Thursday picked up the 14 survivors in Singapore.
"When I heard the news, I immediately left for Singapore by the naval ship Cucut to pick them up," Darmawan said.
The 14 sailors are currently undergoing medical checkups at Batam Hospital.
"They drifted around in the sea for two days. It was, of course, a terrible experience. Therefore, we took them to Batam Hospital for medical check-up," he said.
One Indonesian crew member was killed in the sea accident 75 miles off Bintan Island. The ill-fated MV Mega Permai was carrying staple food from Kalimantan to Tanjungpinang, Sumatra, when it sank.
The Indonesian navy mobilized a helicopter and a warship to help search and rescue the ill-fated ship's crew members but the efforts were hampered by bad weather and huge waves.
On Wednesday afternoon, the crew of the Summer Spirit that was sailing to Singapore saw the 14 Indonesians on a raft, and took them in. .
"The Singaporean tanker was very big so it could withstand huge waves," Darmawan said.
