BRITISH ENVOY OFFERS CONDOLENCES ON ALATAS' PASSING

Jakarta, Dec 11 (ANTARA) - British Ambassador to Indonesia Martin Hatfull has offered his condolences to the family of former Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Alatas who passed away in Singapore on Thursday morning.
"Bapak Ali Alatas was a great statesman known throughout the world for his tireless efforts for peace, both in the region and beyond," Hatfull said in a short text message to Antara on Thursday.
"We will particularly miss his unstinting work to achieve justice and democracy in Burma (Myanmar)," he added.
Hatfull said not only Indonesians but all those who cared for the region would mourn Alatas' passing.
"I feel privileged to have known him over the last few months and to have benefited from his wisdom," the British envoy said.
Similar expressions of condolences also came from Polish Ambassador to Indonesia Thomaz Lukaszuk and Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia Eivind Homme.
Homme said Alatas' passing was a great loss to Indonesia and the global community.
"Mr Alatas was a true internationalist and a strong believer in multilateral cooperation. We consider him a close friend of Norway," the Norwegian envoy said, adding that the former Indonesian foreign affairs minister had left behind a legacy of promoting regional integration and peaceful settlement of conflicts, of international structure and mechanism.
"He has through the years worked with many of our foreign ministers and diplomats. He will be truly missed," Homme said.
Meanwhile, Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia Behrooz Kamalvandi said Alatas was one of the closest and dearest friends of the Islamic Republic of Iran and himself.
"This honorable and great man was not only respected because he was the former minister of foreign affairs of the Republic of Indonesia but also as an intellectual and an internationally well-known elite in many organizations such as UN, ASEAN, OIC, NAM, and so on," Kamalvandi said.
He said Alatas had contributed a lot to the expansion of a culture of human noble values internationally.
"With profound sorrow and deep sadness, on behalf of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran and myself, I express my condolences to the bereaved family, government as well as the people of Indonesia for this great loss. May Allah, the Almighty, bestow him with His greatest blessings and reward him for all the good deeds that he has done during his lifetime," the Iranian ambassador said.
