INDONESIAN TIMBER PRODUCT TRADE LEGITIMATION TO US
Jakarta, Dec 11 (ANTARA) - The US Lacey Act on illegal timber product imported to America was discussed at a seminar on "Changes In International Timber Trade Legislation" here Wednesday (10/12), it was reported here Thursday.
The seminar was jointly held by the Ministry of Forestry, the Ministry of Trade, the US embassy and European Union representative in Indonesia.
"The Lacey Act's main purpose is combating illegal logging, because it is very harmful to Indonesian forestry industries," Indonesian Forest Concessions Association (APHI) chairman, Nanang Roffandi Achmad said here Wednesday (12/10).
He said that the Lacey Act should have a further study whether it was applicable to Indonesian industries or not, and we expected the US government to respect Indonesian sovereignty.
In the implementation of the Lacey Act, an investigation would be needed to get the timber or its product's origin and legitimacy for any timber product entering America.
"An agreement on this matter is needed to avoid legal irregularities, therefore a one-door policy is needed for the verification," Nanang said.
"We need an arbitration body to do this, because other than illegal logging, we are also competing in global trade," he said.
Nanang affirmed that through the Lacey Act, Indonesian timber products can be considered reasonable due to its legitimation, because no buyer would buy any illegal logging product.
The Lacey act was legitimated by the US Congress on May 22, 2008, which forbids plant and timber product trade from illegal sources including timber and its products.
The Lacey act addresses illegal logging and plant trade, and prohibits trade in illegally sourced products, like furniture, paper and lumber, from any US state or any foreign country.
It required importers to declare the country of origin of harvest and species name of all plants contained in their products. It also established penalties on violators, including forfeiture of goods and vessels as fines and jail terms.
