GUN-CARRYING GARUDA PASSENGER NABBED AT AIRPORT

Palangka Raya, Dec 12 (ANTARA) - Security officers at Palangka Raya's Tjilik Riwut airport on Friday nabbed a prospective Garuda Indonesia passenger for carrying a home-made revolver.

The would-be Garuda passenger, identified as FX Sera, was found carrying a home-made revolver in his bag when he passed through the security check at 8:30 on Friday morning.

Sera who was about to board a Garuda flight to Jakarta was detained by the airport security officers and later sent to the Palangka Raya Police office for further investigation.

Sera told the police he had been carrying the revolver for self protection only.

"This revolver is just for self-protection because I work in Puruk Cahu which is prone to robbery and theft," Sera told Palangka Raya police investigators.

Sera claimed he was working as the keeper of an edible swallow nest house in Puruk Cahu, Murung Raya district, but had came to Palangka Raya on Friday morning to catch a plane to Jakarta.

He had brought the revolver from Puruk Cahu without ammunition.

Meanwhile, the chief of the Palangka Raya Police's criminal investigation unit, Adjunct Commissioner Hari Brata, said the gun was a home-made revolver without ammunition.

However, Hari Brata had yet to make an official statement on the case because Sera was still being investigated.

Based on Government Regulation (PP) No.3/2001 on aviation safety and security, any airplane passenger carrying a gun or weapon must report and hand it to the airline company.
