Championship for taekwondo`s `poomsae` to be held in Turkey
SEOUL, Dec. 12 (Yonhap) -- Turkey will host this year's championship for taekwondo's individual demonstrative form, "poomsae," next week, the sport's world governing body said here Friday.
Poomsae is a form of taekwondo in which practitioners exhibit their mastery of
moves, including kicking and punching, that make up the core elements of the
Korea-originated martial art. No head-to-head contest is involved.
The three-day competition will open in Ankara next Tuesday, the World Taekwondo
Federation said, drawing competitors from 56 countries. It will be the first time
the event is being hosted by a country other than South Korea, which has held it
twice since 2006.
Taekwondo has been an official Olympic medal event since the 2000 Sydney Games.
The martial art is practiced in more than 150 countries with about 50 million
participants around the world, according to its advocates.
