VP: GOVT TO PROTECT DOMESTIC FURNITURE MARKET
Jakata, Dec 12 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said the government would protect the domestic furniture market as requested by the Indonesian Handicraft and Furniture Association (ASMINDO).
"The government will meet ASMINDO's request to protect the domestic furniture market," the vice president said at the opening of the 5th national conference of ASMINDO here on Friday.
The vice president's promise drew enthusiastic applause from the hundreds of ASMINDO congress participants.
Earlier, ASMINDO chairperson Ambar Tjahyono had asked the government to give its projects wider opportunities to use furniture and handiwork produced by ASMINDO members.
In response to the request, the vice president said it was very simple for the government to do so as it only needed to issue an instruction to all government agencies to use ASMINDO's products.
Kalla said the government would surely do so, but the important thing to do together was to open new furniture markets to the people at large.
"The important thing for the people at large is the quality and affordable price," the vice president said.
He explained that in the present critical times , the government would protect a number of industries which have good function, absorb a lot of manpower, and have local contents.
"Indonesia's furniture industries cam meet all those criteria. Therefore the government will protect the industry," Kalla said.
The vice president admitted that the decline in furniture export demand would probably be inevitable but Indonesia had better opportunity than other countries such as China, because of its abundant raw materials.
He also reminded ASMINDO that in the critical situation like this, new furniture market opportunity would even be open wide.
Crisis, according to the vice president, would even make new efficiency, open new creativity in facing the difficulties.
"Finally, the domestic furniture market opportunity will be determined by the industry's creativity and efficiency," the vice president said.
