US STATE SECRETARY EXPRESSES CONDOLENCES ON ALATAS` DEATH
Bandung, Indonesia, Dec 12 (ANTARA) - US State Secretary Condoleeza Rice has expressed condolences on the death of Indonesia's former foreign affairs minister Ali Alatas, according to a US embassy press statement received on Friday.
"On behalf of the US government, I would like to express my condolences to Mr Ali Alatas' family and the people of Indonesia on the death of the former minister of foreign affairs," she said.
Alatas, Rice said, was a respected statesman who would be remembered for his efforts to maintain peace and security in the Southeast Asia region.
"As Indonesia's minister of foreign affairs Alatas was also a mediator in the process that resulted in the signing of the peace treaty in Cambodia on 1991," Rice said.
Alatas had also taken part in efforts to include democratic values and respect for human rights in the ASEAN Charter.
"Partners and friends will always remember him," she added.
Ali Alatas' remains were buried Friday (Dec 12) morning in a military ceremony led by Presdient Susuilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the Kalibata Heroes' Cemetery in south Jakarta.
Alatas died of heart attack at the age 76 years on Thursday (Dec 11) at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.
Before serving as Indonesia's foreign affairs minister from 1988 to 1999, Alatas had been Indonesia's representative at the UN headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and also in New York.
