RI-MALAYSIA EPG TO CONTINUE PURSUING ALATAS` IDEAS
Jakarta, Dec 12 (ANTARA) - An Indonesian spokesman for the Indonesia-Malaysia Eminent Persons Group (EPG), Musni Umar, said here on Friday the EPG would continue to pursue the late Ali Alatas's ideas about improving the two countries' relations.
"Ali Alatas' passing away is a great loss to the Indonesian EPG but we have been helped because he has already laid the foundation for improving cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia," Umar said in connection with the death on Thursday of Indonesia's former foreign minister who was also an EPG member.
Umar said in the EPG's three meetings so far held, the Indonesian and Malaysian EPG members had been able to identify three crucial problems with the help of Alatas, namely misunderstanding, misperception and suspicion as well as steps to improve and promote the good relations between the two countries "so that we could continue carrying out this task."
The Indonesia-Malaysia EPG was established on July 7, 2008, resulting from the meeting between Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Malaysian prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in Putrajaya, Malaysia, on January 11, 2008 with members numbering seven from each country.
The EPG is charged with discussing sensitive issues developing in the two countries' communities and the results of the discussion are referred to the respective governments as inputs for improving the two countries' relations.
The Indonesian EPG members are Try Sutrisno, Ali Alatas, Quraish Shihab, Des Alwi, Musni Umar, Pudentia MPSS and Wahyuni Bahar.
The Malaysian members meanwhile are Tun Musa Hitam, Tan Sri Dato Seri Mohd Zahidi Haji Zainuddin, Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim, Tan Sri Abdul Halim Ali, Tan Sri Amar Haji Hamid Bugo, Datuk Syed Ali Tawfik Al-Attas and Datuk Seri Panglima Jospeh Pairin Kitingan.
The Indonesian and Malaysian EPG members meet every month alternately in their countries.
They are scheduled to meet in Kuala Lumpur on December 22-23 without Ali Alatas who died at 7.30am in a Singapore hospital of a heart attack at the age of 76.
His body was buried at the Heroes' Cemetary in Kalibata on Friday, presided over by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
