RI`S SEAWEED EXPORTS ONLY 90,000 TONS PER YEAR
Sumenep, Indonesia, Dec 12 (ANTARA) - Indonesia is so far only exporting 90,000 tons of seaweed per year although world demand for the commodity is very high, a senior fisheries official said.
Production of wet seaweed by farmers in the country now only reached a volume of 1.7 million tons a year, Made L Nurjanah, director general of fisheries, said here Friday.
"Of the volume, only 90,000 tons are exported. Meanwhile, overseas demand is very high," he said.
He said seaweed was a commodity in great demand. "For the past several years we have indeed directed farmers to produce seaweed which is worth exporting," he said.
He said fishery and marine resource ministry officials in the regions had also encouraged farmers to increase their seaweed production.
"In the domestic market demand is also high. I think, seaweed will be a commodity to be needed forever," he said.
He said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in July 2005 had launched an agriculture, fishery and forestry revitalization campaign.
"Under the ministry of fishery and marine resources commodities to be revitalized are shrimp, seaweed and tuna fish. In this context we will continue to develop seaweed cultivation," he said.
Made was in Sumenep on the island of Madura in East Java to attend the grand harvest at a seaweed cluster farming pilot project in Tanjung village, Saronggi, which is a cooperation project between Bank Indonesia Surabaya and the Brackish Fish Farming Center in Situbondo,East Java.
