GOVT TO CREATE EMPLOYMENT FOR THREE MILLION PEOPLE

Jakarta, Dec 12 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government plans to create employment for three million people in 2009 through labor-intensive projects, a minister said.

"In 2009 it is expected there will be jobs for three million people from the ministries of public works, agriculture, transportation and others," Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto said here on Friday.

He said out of the three million workers to be employed 2.5 million would be new workers while the rest would be workers who were laid-off as a result of current financial crisis.

Djoko said his ministry had been asked to create employment for 1.1 million people. "This year we have already made projects for 800,000 workers. So we now just have to create jobs for 300,000," he said.

Several projects from the ministries of public works and transportation were expected to be able to absorb new workers referring to among others toll road development projects in Java.

Djoko said the Semarang-Solo section was expected to be able to be carried out next year as process of land acquisition in the section had finished.

He said "the Jasa Marga toll road operator has chosen the contractor for. There has been no land acquisition problems. If local administrations are quick land acquisition will also be quick," he said.

On the budget for his ministry's projects for 2009 he said that there was no change although he had already asked for an increase.

"I indeed have proposed increasing it but no decision to that effect has been made as it has not been discussed. In the 2009 national budget our budget is set at Rp34.9 trillion," he said.
