RI, CHINA FORM AGRICULTURAL QUARANTINE WORKING GROUP

Beijing, Dec 12 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and China agreed to form a working group on agricultural quarantine in order to exchange information and experience on quarantine based on mutual respect.

"Both countries agreed to establish a working group on agricultural quarantine. It is expected to be realized annually and in turn in China and Indonesia," Syukur Iwantoro, head of the Agricultural Quarantine Agency at the Agriculture Ministry said here on Friday.

The working group was held for two days on December 11 and 12 at China's General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) and attended by the two countries' agricultural quarantine officials.

The working group meeting is a form of cooperation following the signing of memorandum of understanding and consultation on sanitary and phytosanitary issues in order to guarantee the products and consumers' safety.

The MoU was signed on December 11, 2008.

"In the working group, both countries respect the basic principles of WTO/SPS (World Trade Organization/Sanitary and Phytosanitary) on agricultural quarantine.

It also will announce pesticide regulations issued by the two countries, and also secure the quality and safety of bilateral agricultural products trade," Iwantoro said.

"With the working group, each country is expected to announce quarantine regulations issued by the two countries," he added.

Indonesia and China also agreed to develop the quarantine cooperation scientifically based on the WTO/SPS principle to overcome quarantine obstacles, said Iwantoro.

The two countries also agreed to get a list of agricultural quarantine pesticides, the procedures and methods on verification of plants for exports and imports, methods and techniques of agricultural quarantine treatment, methods of identifying pesticides and phytosanitary certificate information.

Both countries also agreed to strengthen cooperation in market access for agricultural products, through technical information communication and supplies of new agricultural products, he said.

The annual meeting of the working group, Iwantoro said, was very important to evaluate the annual activities.
