CENTRAL SULAWESI POLICE FOIL EBONY SMUGGLING ATTEMPT

Palu, Central Sulawesi, Dec. 13 (ANTARA) - Central Sulawesi water police recently foiled an attempt to smuggle thousands of ebony and Amara logs to Tawau, Malaysia.

The smuggling was prevented by a raid conducted on boats filled with the logs, following a tip-off from local people, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Supriadi, head of the Central Sulawesi water police, said here on Saturday.
Based on the tip-off, the police made a field investigation. "The information was true. We found a number of boats moored along the West Coast that were preparing to sail to Tawau, Malaysia, with illegal ebony and Amara logs in their holds," he said.
Supriadi said his men had intensified patrols in Cental Sulawesi waters to prevent log smuggling from the province.
The intensified water patrols were in line with an instruction from the new National Police Chief to increase efforts to fight illegal logging activities, he said.
The Central Sulawesi police had seized a total of 1,095 illegal logs loaded on four boats, and detained 20 suspects over the past one month, he said.
However, one of the 20 suspects was still under 15 years old and therefore would be treated differently in accordance with existing lawd, he said.
