GOVT CONTINUES IMPROVING SOCIAL WELFARE OF PEOPLE ON RI-PNG BORDER AREAS
Jayapura, Dec 14 (ANTARA) - The government will continue attempting to improve social welfare of the people living on border areas shared by Indonesia and Papua New Guinea (PNG).
It has to be done after learning the two countries' border areas which constituts a strategic area and become a priority of national and provincial development program.
The remark was made by Eko Subowo MBA, the Border Areas Director of the Directorate General for Public Administration of the Home Ministry, here on Sunday.
"The development of border areas as future region is to be implemented through two approaches, namely social welfare and security by means of enhancing accessibility and accelarated development of the area," he said.
Sharing the border with PNG, the Papuan province has a strategic role as the front premise of the Indonesia's unity seen from economic aspect, in addition to functioning as the gate for the traffics of human beings, goods and capital in the context of Asia Pacific economic cooperation.
Politically, the border also has a strategic role for security belt in East Indonesian region in the framework of safeguarding the unity of Indonesia.
The urgent programs that should be immediately implemented is just improving the social welfare of community living in border areas despite increasing agricultural development, developing the facility and infrastructure of health, road betterment, the construction of traditional market as well as promoting educational quality and infrastructure.
"We are attempting to make the level of social welfare of Indonesian people living on border areas to be better than those of neighboring country," he said.
