Jeddah, Dec. 15 (ANTARA/IINA) - The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) has expressed grief and sorrow over the death of former Indonesian Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas, a prominent Muslim figure.
"Throughout his life, Alatas made valuable contributions and rendered palpable services to both his country and the Islamic Ummah. He also supported Islamic solidarity," according to an OIC statement.
Alatas' life was marked by his unwavering support for the OIC. He also played a key role in the Committee of Eminent Persons in amending the OIC Charter, which was adopted during the 11th Islamic Summit held in Dakar, Senegal, in March 2008.
The OIC Secretary General Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has sent a condolence message to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, praying to God Almighty to bestow on the deceased His infinite mercy and solace, accept him among the truthful and the martyrs, and reward him for the good deeds he performed in the service of the Islamic Ummah.
Prof. Ihsanoglu also extended his heartfelt condolences to the brotherly people of Indonesia and to the members of Alatas family.
Ali Alatas died on Thursday at the age of 76. Alatas, who served as Indonesia's foreign minister from 1988 and 1999, passed away at Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital following a heart attack.
Alatas was born on November 4, 1932 in Jakarta, and graduated from the Academy for the Indonesian Foreign Service in 1954, and from the Faculty of Law at the University of Indonesia in 1956.
He served as foreign minister from 1988 until 1999. He was also Indonesian ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva from 1975 to 1978 and New York from 1982 to 1988.
In recent years he had been a UN special envoy tasked with drafting a report on development, security and human rights, and a member of the UN High Level Group on the Alliance of Civilizations.
