EARTHQUAKE JOLTS WEST SUMATRA ON TUESDAY

Bengkulu, Sumatra, Dec. 16 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter Scale jolted West Sumatra on Tuesday at 4.18 am Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

The quake's epicenter was located at 3.03 degrees southern latitude and 100.75 degrees eastern longitude, around 51 km southeast of South Pagai, Mentawai, West Sumatra, or 64 km southwest of Mukomuko, Bengkulu, at a depth of 10 km below sea level, according to information of the national meteorology and geophysics office.

The temblor, which did not have potential to trigger a tsunami, was also felt by residents of Bengkulu, who rushed out of their houses in panic.

Last Monday (Dec. 15), Ternate was rocked by a 5.2-magnitude earthquake. The quake's epicenter was at 2.47 degrees northern latitude and 127.08 degrees eastern longitude, about 190 km northwest of Ternate, at a depth of 10 km beneath the seabed.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, sits on the Pacific
"Ring of Fire," the edge of a tectonic plate prone to seismic
upheaval.

On December 26, 2004, a powerful earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale and a subsequent deadly tsunami devastated Aceh Province and Nias Island (North Sumatra), and killed around 200,000 people.
